Beyond the city

Albania starts about an hour up the road.

Tirana is a fine city and a better base. Keep the apartment, go north for two days, come back and sleep in your own bed — or use us as the first and last night of a bigger loop.

Theth & the Blue Eye

3 h north

Stone tower houses under limestone walls, a waterfall, and a spring so cold and clear it looks fake. The Albanian Alps at their most photogenic.

Day tour 12 h+Better as 2 nights

Valbona to Theth

The classic

Albania's great walk: the Koman Lake ferry, a night in Valbona, then six hours over the pass into Theth. Nothing else in the country comes close.

3 daysJun–Oct

Mrizi i Zanave, Fishtë

1 h 15 north

The original — Altin Prenga's agriturism, the place that taught Albania to be proud of its own produce. Long lunches of cheese, cured meat and vegetables from the farm outside. Book well ahead and give it the whole afternoon.

Half dayBook ahead

Lake Koman ferry

2 h 30 north

A working ferry through a flooded gorge that people reasonably compare to the fjords. Go for the boat, not the destination.

Full day

Berat

2 h south

The UNESCO 'city of a thousand windows' — Ottoman houses stacked up a hillside beneath a castle that people still live inside.

Day trip

Krujë

40 min north

Skanderbeg's castle above an old bazaar of copper, kilims and antiques. The easiest half-day out of Tirana.

Half day

Bovilla Lake & Gamti

45 min north

A turquoise reservoir in a limestone bowl, with a short sharp climb to a ridge above it. The best big view you can get and still be home for dinner.

5–6 h

Shala River

Half day north

Clear green water between vertical cliffs, reached by boat from Lake Koman. Swim, eat trout, come back sunburnt.

Full day

Shkodër & Rozafa

1 h 45 north

A bicycle city with a lake, a castle on a bluff with a bleak founding legend, and the best cafe culture outside Tirana.

Day trip

Gjirokastër

3 h 30 south

The 'stone city' — slate roofs, an Ottoman bazaar, and a castle full of confiscated artillery. Pair it with the Blue Eye and Sarandë.

Overnight

Durrës

40 min west

The nearest sea, plus a Roman amphitheatre that once held twenty thousand people sitting under an ordinary residential street.

Half day

Osumi Canyons

2 h 30 south

Rafting between walls a hundred metres high. Best in spring when the water is up.

Full dayApr–Jun

The Riviera

3–4 h south

Dhërmi, Himarë, Gjipe. Turquoise water, olive terraces, and the Llogara pass to get there.

Driving times are from central Tirana in normal conditions. The mountain roads north of Shkodër are slow and beautiful; the Theth–Valbona pass is generally walkable from June to early October. Ask us and we will tell you honestly whether a trip is worth doing as a day out or deserves a night.

Booking direct is the cheapest way to stay — no platform fee on top — and it means you are talking to the family who owns the place from the very first message. If you would rather book through a platform you already trust, both listings are below and we will look after you exactly the same.
